Robert got me thinking about school

Scoble has me thinking "Note to Steve Jobs: unions are only half of school's problems"  I agree with Steve "No amount of technology will improve education"  I think its insane to push computers into the class room, this device is a tool no different a hammer.  It does not help you think only help you do.  So yes you can have as many tools as you want they will not help you learn to learn.  Now Unions, I like unions and I know they have problems but they are not the root of all evil as some like to make out.

Don Doge Thinks its incentives and he is dead wrong.  Teachers don't choose to teach for the money, ideally the wages should help cover the cost of living and Unions help prevent schools from firing senor teachers to hire cheaper fresh out of college staff.

I do tend to agree with Giovanni Rodriguez Dumb Moment: Steve Jobs Demonizes Teacher Unions and Are Teachers Being Paid Adequately?

Public education is complicated, its politics at its whose, every state and every city want to do it different.  Its a  pipe dream really.  How can you offer equal education for all when we are truly not the same?  How can we do this efficiently and economically when ever school has a different set of text books and a different set of lesson plans.  That doesn't even cover the fact that most of our poor scores come from at risk schools ESL schools who's children don't stay for long or are put/promoted into grade level base on age not merit.  Don't criticize the teacher all they can do is teach the willing.  If the principle promotes the F student because, and the principle does not remove trouble makers.  How much teaching can really get done.

Update Alfred Thompson chimed in with People Who Know Nothing About Schools Telling Us How to Fix Them.  I fully agree.

Aaron,
I have to disagree with your assessment of computers in the classroom. There is ample documented evidence that they can help student learning. Of course, it doesn't work the same for all students, but for those who are visual and/or kinesthetic learners, computers have done wonders. I work in the field of educational technology, and I have seen first-hand how students who were having difficulties with traditional methods have blossomed with they were introduced to a computer or other similar technology in the learning environment.

Stephen,
I have trouble with the idea that "technology in the class room" is the solution. That every one needs it in order to learn and with out it they will be left behind. What I have seen happen is for schools with computers to only teach students how to use computers. With the assumption that some how the computer will teach the students.
As you clearly point out there is a different way. When teachers integrate technology into their lesson plans amazing things can happen. There are things that TV's and Computers can do to show students and help them learn that no lecture nor text book could ever accomplish.
But give every teacher and student a laptop. And I will show you many heavy paper weights.

Technology in the classroom is not "the" solution. It is "a" solution for quite a few students. I began integrating technology into my lessons in the mid-90s and I saw some a lot of the amazing things you referenced. The problem is that a lot of teachers (especially older ones) are not learning the proper ways to use the technology as a learning tool. One of the project I've been working on for two years involves outfitting a few classrooms with laptops, but there is a great deal of training and professional development that the teachers in the program must complete in order to implement the program. More and more schools are trying to make the technology more than just paper weights. I get to see plenty of examples almost daily where technology is used the right way, and I only wish that more people could see it also.
